José is José Pizarro's first London tapas bar, opened in 2011, and it remains a cult favourite for authentic Spanish small plates in Bermondsey. Inspired by the bustling tapas bars around La Boquería market in Barcelona and traditional bars in Andalucía, the space is intimate and lively with counter seating, an open kitchen, and a daily changing menu written on blackboards. The focus is on quality Spanish ingredients, including acorn-fed jamón ibérico, alongside classic dishes like pan con tomate and padron peppers, all paired with an impressive selection of 50 Spanish wines and sherries served by glass.

The restaurant operates a no-booking, first-come-first-served policy, which adds to the authentic tapas bar atmosphere where locals and visitors happily squeeze in for exceptional food. The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition acknowledges the outstanding quality and value, whilst the relaxed, rustic setting keeps the focus firmly on the food and wine.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes are genuinely welcomed both inside and outside, with water bowls provided on arrival, making it an excellent choice for a meal out with your four-legged friend.
